Study On Conservation Planning Of Historical Districts Inside The City Wall

The historical districts inside the city wall are crowded with many cultural sites under government protection, historical architecture and blocks, local residence and key traffic path. The city wall serves as the spatial restraint and closely connects these sections, which presents, to some extent, unity and continuity. Such sections are organic components of the city wall scenery system, the carriers of deep structure of Xi'an city, whose existence is of high historical value. They should be well protected in order to unveil the antiquity side of Xi'an City.Since the 1980s, the city wall, the circular green belt and ring roads have been repaired and treated for several times. As for the controlling mode, it is only limited to the height control. Therefore, the urban tissue with cultural value, spatial pattern of ancient alleys, the traditional Guanzhong dwelling area and the historical and cultural sites under protection inside the city wall are, to some extent, damaged and occupied, which caused the disorder of architectural styles and its disharmony with the city wall.This research conducted surveys on the inner side of the wall, proposed the concept of historical districts inside the wall and criteria of setting up the protection area;and tentatively put forward the protecting and reconstructing measures on the inner side of the historical districts. With the constraint of the author's research capacity and time, therefore, the emphasis of this paper goes to the research on the eastern part divided by the North-South central axis. With the area being further divided into several blocks, the research mainly touches on the common problems with specific purpose, evaluates the status quo of current protection efforts, analyses the issues in protection practice and tentatively discuss and conclude the protection measures on inboard area protection of historical and cultural relics.
