For its role in improving reliability and quality of power supply, Distribution Automation (DA) has become an important driving force to promote the development of smart distribution grid. Communication Network is the nervous system of Distribution Automation System (DAS), on the one hand the uplink to transfer the remote measurement and remote signaling of RTU, on the other hand the downlink to convey the remote control from power dispatching center. As the essential part of DA, Communication System directly determines the performance of DAS.This paper focuses on the function and role of DAS, and networking mode and data communication characteristics of power distribution automation communication systems under the current situation of smart power grid construction; secondly, it studies several communication technologies, analyzes its characteristics and networking modes, and sums up the advantages and disadvantages of various technologies in distribution network applications. Finally, based on in-depth research and analysis of the distribution network’s characteristics of Jingjiang city, combining the analysis of needs for communications in DAS and automation business, this paper suggests a hierarchical structure of the power distribution automation communication system. Backbone layer communication layer is formed using the existing SDH optical fiber SPDnet, while the access layer communication network is formed using EPON technology (three remote points), and GPRS/CDMA technology (two remote points or one remote point). It selects this Jingjiang region’s three typical ways of wiring to design EPON network topology, including single radiation type, ring type and hand in hand type. This communication system greatly improves the automation level of power distribution, enhances the efficiency of fault detection and repairing, and further improves the reliability of power supply and users’satisfaction.
