With the construction of strong smart grid, the safe operation of the grid already caused the attention of each respect more and more. Power transmission line is an important step in the electrical power transmission, so the monitoring of transmission lines has very important practical value. The difference between domestic video monitoring scheme of transmission line is the video imformation mode they adopted. At present the optical fiber of the power transmission lines has some idle resources, which provides great convenince for realization of fiber network.Based on the above analysis, firstly the existing video monitoring transmission schemes of transmission line are analyzed and compared. Against the wireless transmission, cable especially the optical transmission technology is high stability and security, and provides more bandwidth resources. As a mature optical access technology, EPON is widely applied in the distribution network. So the application of EPON in transmission lines has much advantages. Secondly, the video monitoring system on the transmission lines are designed, and the needs of video monitoring in transmission lines are investigated thoroughly, the core functions and key issues of monitor terminal and monitoring ceter are analyzed. Finallly, the application of EPON in transmission line video monitoring system is discussed. It analyzes and calculates the optical power attenuation of the EPON network in the paper, realizes the EPON networking design, and presents a bandwidth allocation strategy which is ideal for the demanding environment.
