Full face rock tunnel boring machine (TBM) as an excellent performance of underground construction equipment, is widely used in tunnel engineering of the city subways, pipelines, railway transport. It’s one of the iconic products in the field of heavy equipment manufacturing industry in our country.Currently, most of the equipment-related components of TBM need to be imported from abroad. As the key component of TBM, the disc cutter contacts with the rocks directly in rock breaking and excavation process. Therefore the impact on the disc cutter is very great, and the working environment is very bad, it is easy to cause wear and damage of the disc cutter, and the cutter’s life is shorter than the other components. So the dynamic process of rock breaking was simulated to study the stress situation of the disc cutter, which will have a great significance on improving the rock breaking ability, tunneling efficiency of TBM and the life of disc cutter. So this paper studied the disc cutter mounting of the TBM. The main work of the paper is as follows:(1) Firstly the TBM disc cutter rock breaking theories and installation is introduced. There are three kinds of the main rock breaking theories, which are squeezing rock breaking theory, Cutting and squeezing rock breaking theory and stretching and squeezing rock breaking theory. On the basis of the normal installation of the cutters, forward installation and extraversion installation are proposed in this paper, and the advantages of these two installation methods are discussed.(2) The single cutter rock breaking mechanical model was built and the rocking breaking process is simulated by using the ABAQUS software. The establishment of a good three-dimensional simulation model, then the simulation values and the experimental values of Colorado University of Missouri-Rolla were compared, and it shows that results of stress situation from numerical simulation were close to the values of and experimental results. Therefore the correctness of the model is proved, and this will provide the data support for the next analysis.(3) The analysis for the simulation results of single and double cutter models. For single cutter, Firstly the optimal camber angle under different depth of cut conditions was analyzed, then following the optimal camber angle under different cutting speed conditions was studied. For the double cutter, under the equal depth of cut, equal spacing and equal cutting speed situation, the stress situations of different cambers were studied, and the corresponding optimal camber angle was acquired.
