With the development of large-scale underground engineering, tunnel boring machine (TBM) is widely used in underground tunnel projects. Disc cutter is the main tool to broken the rock, it has high cost and large consumption, and it has a greater impact on job performance of TBM, so the study of disk cutters has very important significance. This paper mainly researches the layout method and the installation method of disc cutter.Firstly, it analyses the type of disc cutter, the rock breaking mechanism and the force prediction model of disk cutters. Studying the effects of stress on the cutter head balance, and calculating the radial force and cutter overturning moment, summarizing the disc cutter layout principles and adjustment programs in the cutter head.Secondly, under the condition of disc cutter layout principles, putting forward a disc cutter spiral layout method, analyzing the influence of the spiral arrangement of the balance of the cutter head. Under the condition of determining some parameters, described how to implement the disc cutter spiral arrangement. Written an optimization program by using Visual Basic, and applied to the TB880E which introduced form foreign in Qinling Tunnel Project to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the spiral layout method.Finally, proposing two new tool installations:tilt-outward installation and tilt-outward installation, different form the normally installed disc cutter. Disc cutter three-dimensional rock breaking process is simulated by using ABAQUS under the three methods of installation. In the rolling disc cutter rock breaking process, rock surface has greater stress in tilt-outward installation than the disc cutter being normally installed; lateral stress field distribution of rock breaking knife blade tilt-forward installation lap was better than normal installation. It verified that the tilt-outward installation and tilt-forward installation have an advantage over normally installation.
