Dalian city is very special which was born in war and grew up rapidly. After the Sino Japanese War in 1898, Russia got the profit which is leasing the Dalian area from the war and found the city named DALNY. After the defeat of the Russo Japanese War, Japanese seized the possession of Dalian. Since the colonization of Russia and Japan, Dalian has become an important economic and cultural center from some small villages in Northeast China. From the point of view of the history of urban development in China, a modern city along the China-East railway was usually consisted of Chinese feudal traditional city +concession/subsidiary/commercial ports, but Dalian has no feudal traditional city, no concession/subsidiary/commercial ports. It is a new colony, a city purely designed by foreign architects with foreign urban theory.This paper tried to study the plan and construction of early modern Dalian city, and discuss the city morphology and the reasons behind from the angle of architecture, considering the political factors, geographic shape, power center, mainstream planning ideal and economic development. As a result, to reveal the urban morphology evolution process.
