A Study On The Morphological Evolution Of Modern Jilin City Since 1881

The thesis is one of the sub-projects that subsidiszed by State Natural Science Funds(50678042).The Jilin city has a 300-year-old history, and it is not only one of the few cities which are transformed from the old feudalistic cities but also one of the 4 historic culture cities of the northeast district. In 1881, the Jilin Institution of Machinery was founded, which stood for the outset of the neoteric history of the city. Hundred of years later, the city has transformed from an old martial city which is close into a modern city which is open, and the process of evolution is really complicated.In the perspective of history, based on the use of the city ground, the expansion of space and the transformation of the urban spatial structure, this paper not only describes the city shape in 6 historical periods but also analyzes the characteristic of different shape that is in different period. Researching on the evolution process of the city shape, this paper puts forward the characteristic of the development of the city. In neoteric time, the characteristics of the development of the city are as follows: expansion characteristic of the space, dispersive characteristic of the space, imbalance characteristic of the development of different districts, instability characteristic of the developing-speed, complicated characteristic of the city function and the open characteristic of the city structure. In modern time, the characteristics of the development of the city are as follows: the space-bouncing characteristics of the city expansion, the river-along characteristics of the blocks and the netting-form characteristics of the structures. Based on all the works above, it brings forward the main factors that affect the evolution of the city shape, they are the limit and guidance of the natural environment, the impulse of the economy structure, the control of the policy and the acceleration of the development of the industry and traffic. It also analyzes how the factors and the city shape affect each other.As the Jilin city is expanding so fast and the urban-planning practice is also developing very fast, researches on the city shape could do help to the logistic development of the city. Fully understanding the shape-transforming principles of the city could help the planners forecast the foreground of the urban-planning more accurately. It is also hoped that this paper could do some help to the urban-planning practice of Jilin city.
