The construction and operation of the Middle East Railway have prompted Harbin and Dalian,which are two ends of the Southern Branch,to gradually develop into early modern cities driven by special society.It is not only reflected in the successive role of multiculturalism and the constant migration of large numbers of immigrants,but also includes the rise and prosperity of a series of urban planning activities.Among them,the development of a large number of urban parks reflects the advanced Western concepts,diverse ethnic styles,and colourful activities during the period,which has important research value and significance.The paper starts with a macro perspective and sorts out the planning of urban green space in Harbin and Dalian,what is,each city has been divided into four different periods,and discussed according to the logic from planning and construction background to urban planning to green space planning to green space construction,then focuses on the similarities and differences in the evolution process of them,summarizes it into site selection,spatial distribution,scale evolution,type four aspects,and analyzes their driving factors of politics,economy,ideology and natural environment.It not only outlines the historical trajectory of Harbin and Dalian in early modern times,but also provides a basic understanding for the macro development background of the urban parks.The second part of the paper,based on a large number of documents and interviews with relevant personnel,explores a case-by-case study of historical information in modern Harbin and Dalian urban parks.The social characteristics of them are summarized from three dimensions of planning standard,garden design sense and social activity,trying to restore the original appearance and driving mechanism in the course of development.The paper finally explores the planning and design of urban parks,in addition to integrating the site selection consideration of existing resources,surrounding formats,service area and rail traffic,it also includes the analysis of spatial structure,garden elements,garden architectures and structures.The research method also includes field surveys,what are,conducting on-site measurement and shooting,viewing documentaries and movies that were captured during this period to provide data.In summary,the paper selects Harbin and Dalian in early modern times to sort out the planning of urban green space,the development of urban parks,and the planning and design of urban parks,in order to enrich the theoretical resultsof urban planning along the Middle East railways in early modern times,fill in the lack of research on the existence of garden history and architecture,and provides help to the related legacy protection work in the future.
