A Study On The Traditional Settlement Landscape In Xin County, Henan Province

In Xin County, Henan Province, there are numerous traditional settlements, which have high landscape values, and reflect the ancestor’s wisdom of transforming nature, and dealing with the relationship of human of land. This thesis took the traditional settlement landscape in Xin County as research object, and characterized the landscape features through literature study, field survey and pictorial summary methods, in order to work for the protection of the local traditional settlements and provide references and advice for local rural construction.Firstly, this thesis explored the regional backgrounds of local traditional settlement landscape from the aspects of nature and humanity. Secondly, this thesis made a detailed analysis of five typical settlements, including Dawan (XiHe Village), Loushanglouxia (Maopu Village), Dingliwan, Dawan (Tianpu), and Hanshan. Thirdly, this thesis summarized the commonness and individuality of the traditional settlement landscape, from the external aspect (settlement distribution, pattern of Fengshui, plane form, vertical form, farmlands) and the internal aspect (boundary and entrance, buildings, streets, water system, green space). Then this thesis refined the values of the traditional settlement landscape, and put forward some solutions for current problems. In this thesis, the conclusion shows that the traditional settlement landscape in Xin County is the mixture of multiple cultures, the embodiment of the harmony between human and nature, and works of arts with beauty and simplicity. For its protection and development, we should build a settlement system on the macro level, improve the environment quality of residents, and forbid unreasonable constructions.
