Children, as an essential part of our society, are an important resource of the sustainable development of the society. Outdoor games and activities, which can create more opportunities for children to be exposed to nature, play an important role in many aspects of children’s growth process, including children’s creativity and imagination, cognitive capacity and interest, thinking and intelligence, physical fitness and so on. With the enhancement of the concern about children’s education in recent years, people around the world attach extensive importance to the instructive role of outdoor games on children, as a result, the design and construction of outdoor playgrounds attract more and more attention.Environmental designers hope to devise more varied and perfect playgrounds based on professional theory and design skills to provide more external conditions good for children’s growth, combined with the current development status of urban children’s playing space. From the layout of playgrounds to the selection of materials and colors, and then to the choice of plant species, every detail ought to meet the demands of children, so as to provide them with a comfortable outdoor playing space and leave them a sweet memory of the childhood.At the outset, the article makes a comprehensive discourse on the development status and theoretical research of the outdoor playing space for children in cities at home and abroad. Through the statement, combining children’s outdoor amusement space and outdoor playing space for children with the psychological study of urban landscape planning, design theory, design principles as well as the requirements of combining theory with practice, the article conducts a comprehensive analysis of the existing cases of foreign children’s playing space, based on field research on the On-Water Park, the People’s Park, the Hebin Park, the style garden, and in terms of the venues, recreational facilities, plants locating, and other supporting facilities design, and the article analyzes the current conditions of the Tianjin Children’s outdoor playing space, as well as the existing problems, some of the outdoor playing space and gives recommendations on space design, with an aim to providing reference for rational planning and design of subsequent children’s outdoor playing space.
