With the rapid development of city modernization, city lighting projects are carried out in full swing in major cities. Most of the existing research of city street lamp are focused on professional technical lighting. But there are still many problems in the morphology design of street lamp. City street lamp, as an industrial product, is a combination of technology and art. After learning some technical knowledge related to street lamp, how to design street lamp and combine it with city culture so that it can both meets the aesthetic needs and has the specific cultural connotations, is the main content of this paper.The morphology of street lamp is the external manifestation that can be directly perceived by people, whose visual language is a means of its own capabilities, visual identity and cultural connotations. Based on the systematic study of product semantics theory, street lamp and morphological knowledge, this paper firstly explores the relationship between the morphology of street lamp and product semantics and discusses the specific processes of product semantics applying in the morphology design of street lamp. It also analyzes the contextual factors associated with the morphology design of street lamp, which including users’ physical and psychological, natural geographical and cultural factors. Then, the paper analyzes the semantic elements of street lamp from three aspects of descriptive semantics, aesthetic semantics and symbolic semantics, expecting that it not only meets the functional requirements, but also generates emotional resonance and establishes a close relationship between lamps and users, so that street lamps integrate with the city environment harmoniously and convey the city culture and connotation effectively. Then, By analyzing several typical cases of street lamps, the paper summaries four morphologic semantics principles of the street lamp design and concludes the corresponding generation method of semantics. Finally, it conducts morphology design of street lamp for Handan city to verify the feasibility of the theory in practice. By introducing product semantics to street lamp design, street lamps are not only limited to the function itself, but emphasize aesthetic, emotional needs and close contact with city culture, which provides new ideas for the morphology design of street lamp and makes it more complete and progress.
