With the continuous development of comprehensive national strength and economic level of China together with rapid growth of motor vehicles, elevated highway system grows larger in our country when suffering from the increasing traffic jam and weak traffic infrastructure. This system plays an important role to ease the traffic pressure and improves traffic condition, which now becomes one significant part of modern city landscape. Therefore we have to focus on the discussion how to grasp the relationship between increasing viaducts and surrounding environment as well as how to make rational use of such new space generated hereby. The author analyzes and considers the establishing style of such landscape attached to urban viaducts and also puts forward the target, major content as well as the significance of such research. By analyzing and organizing some relevant theories together with model examples from domestic and foreign countries, the author gives some certain definitions to related concepts and analyzed some involved problems systematically such as space types, constitute elements, spatial character, function, etc. After field investigation and analysis, the author comes to a conclusion of present situation of space utilization for viaduct attached space and various restraining factors during the utilization process. Meanwhile the author comes up with some major problems existed in the current situation of space utilization, explores its potential, arises rationalistic consideration and then summarizes the fundamental principles with optimization strategies that shall be obeyed during space utilization. Taking the viaduct attached space in Xi’an as an example, in this article, author himself also proposes a suitable and reasonable optimization strategy accordingly, in comparison and analysis with some domestic cases along with its local characteristics of regional culture, which offers a reference to future landscape utilization and exploration of viaduct attached space.
