There is a paradox in the upsurge of cultural building construction in China. On one hand, the citizens’ daily lives are lacking of cultural activities, on the other hand, the cultural buildings such as theatres, museums, exhibition halls, and libraries, which are built by the government for a better public cultural service, are short of popularity and in a low usage rate.A survey on the usage of cultural buildings and analysis about the cultural activities in citizens’ daily lives have been set to reason the paradox. Through the research, the thesis raises a new concept in cultural building system to solve the problem, the “Cultural Building Endings”.Similar to nerve ending, cultural building ending is the smallest organization in the cultural building system. They locate in urban public spaces wherever daily cultural activities frequently happen. Instead of being independent buildings, they always attach to urban public facilities such as street, market and bus shelters. They offer cultural service and disseminate culture during the citizens’ “negative time”, the fragmentary time among the one after another affairs in the daily life, such as the waiting time and the traffic time. They are smaller, simpler, more flexible, and distribute wider than any other kind of cultural buildings. The research focuses on the distribution and design principles of cultural building endings, and gives 5 projects based on different sites.
