Yao Hanyuan, the founder of the science of water conservancy history, was the leading figure in the study of China’s water conservancy history. He devoted his whole life into the study and development of water conservancy history, and his study covered a wide range of aspects thereof. In the study of the ancient Yellow River, he made an unprecedented contribution in river channel change as well as its coping methods, the utilization of silt in ancient china, and the events of water conservancy about Yellow River. It was he who put forward the "four phases of channel change" hypothesis of the Yellow River, his studies also revealed changes on the relationship of "Huang-Yun (the Yellow River and the Jinghang Canal)" in Ming and Qing dynasty, which deepened our knowledge of the ancient Yellow River. At the same time, systematically and completely, his studies highlighted the positive role of silt and teased out the facts of utilization of silt in ancient China. He also challenged the vision that Zheng Guo as a spy of Qin State, created a new explanation for "Wang Jing’s river regulation efforts" and "the calm of Yellow River" on the basis of historical facts.During the pursuit of his scholarship, Yao Hanyuan had formed many valuable thoughts, including "researching on the basis of historical facts", "keeping the spirit of rigorous scholarship", "concerning reality and applying", "researching with an open attitude", "willing to devote" and "researching should be driven by benevolence".His efforts to promote the research method of combining the science of water conservancy with the subject of history made him an important role in the study of China’s water conservancy history.
