Yao Hanyuan(1913—2009)was a famous the science of water conservancy history in our country.He was a pioneer and explorer in the research of water history in The People's Republic of China,and a professor-level senior engineer of the Chinese Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research.He devoted all his life to the study of the history of water conservancy history in China.He was unique and never stopped writing.Especially in the study of the history of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal,he made great achievements and had a wide impact at home and abroad.This paper fully collecting historical materials and reference on the basis of predecessors' research results,using the theories and methods of dialectical materialism and historical materialism,and using the comprehensive theories of historical geography,hydraulic engineering,historical philology and textual research.From the overview of Yao Hanyuan's research work in China's water conservancy history and his commitment to the history of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal,this paper focuses on analyzing and discussing Yao Hanyuan's research on the history of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal,the basic theory study on the grand canal,canal engineering technology,Yellow River and Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal relations research of the Ming and Qing dynasties and the academic ideas,methods,and contribution of The History of the Grand Canal to show Yao Hanyuan's academic style in the study of the history of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal and the way to achieve remarkable success,so as to show from a side the historical process of the ups and downs of the cause of water history research since the founding of the People's Republic of China and the outstanding contribution of water history researchers.
