With the rapid development of electronic science and technology, most of systems require different frequencies or different range of signals. Such electrical equipment has been referred to as the signal generator. It is widely used in automatic control,electronics and other fields of scientific experiments. It is one of the most important basic electronic measuring instruments. The signal generator is very helpful for electrical parameter measurement system.This paper studied the history of the signal generator, analyzed and summarized the related main direction and the research in measurement field, pointed out a high efficiency project, which is based on Digital Signal Processor plus Field Programmable Gate Array. On the one side, author selected BF531 as the Digital Signal Processor which is full of interfaces. It also has a powerful digital signal processing and integrated control capability. So it is used as the core control chip. On the other side, selected EP3C16Q240C8 N as the Complex Programmable Logic Device, The FPGA completed waveform generation and make the waveform data stored in the RAM of FPGA. It will update waveform data via DSP in time. The data generated by FPGA transferred to low pass filter through D/A conversion. The waveform is transferred to output by the gain control circuit and the DC voltage bias circuit.On the base of large theoretical knowledge implement, the subject of the function/arbitrary waveform generator can be controlled through the PC, also can be used as stand-alone test equipment. This paper summary the recent research and completed the hardware design of function/arbitrary waveform generator, and put forward some hard problem for further study and research.
