Sunshade as architecture component is one of the efficient methods to improve indoor thermal environment and decrease building energy consumption, especially in summer.Zhejiang Province is located in the ’hot summer and cold winter zone’, wherelocal residentshave been exploring amounts of ways adjusting the architecture constructions to fit in thesurrounding climate. Certainly, sunshade takes an important role among these adapted constructions. In this paper, the typical sunshade constructions of traditional dwellings in Zhejiang Province are reviewed and collected by literature reading and in-field investigation. Then, numerical simulation is performed to analyze the shading effect of these sunshade constructions on physical environment and annual energy consumption. Based on the analysis results, optimization of sunshade design is proposed, which will provide liable support and suggestion for rebuilding or newly-designing of habitat houses in Zhejiang Province or other locations in hot summer and cold winter zone. This article mainly consists of thefollowing three parts:Firstly, sunshade constructions are reviewed and summarized by literature reading and in-field investigation. The review is mainly related to riverside houses and mountainous traditional houses in Zhejiang Province. And the typical factors of sunshade construction are extracted, such as cornice, atrium, andlattice window. Secondly, Zhongfutang is selected as thesimulation model, which is a typical riverside house located in Xitang. Scale of atrium, size of cornice and combination of latticewindows are the major factors considered in this part. Then effect of these major factors on indoor lighting environment, annualHVAC energy consumption of building, indoor and outdoor wind environment is fully analyzed by numerical simulation. Based ontheresults, the optimization value of themajor factors is recognized. Sunshade related optimization methodsare then set in virtual model of Chen House to reduce the energy consumption. Finally, a few suggestion and practical methods about sunshade rebuilding and design are summarized, hoping to support building energy saving of households in Zhejiang Province and other locations in hot summer and cold winter zone.
