With the increase of economy, people’s living standard improves, the usage of material of buildings are bricks, lime, cement instead of soil, grass and straw, then developed into reinforced concrete. It’s decreasing and almost disappeared. This article focuses on the Regional characteristics of local residents’buildings and propound the protection and usage of them.As major cities in Northwest plain, Dezhou, liaocheng and Binzhou city has got the typical characters of residential architecture. These cities had become important ports after the Jing-hang Canal opened, so the residential architecture was influenced by the Canal culture, and has build up a typical North residential architecture in that way. The article analysis these cities’residential architecture in Ming-qing dynasty with examples, use integral analysis method, gathering the characters of settlement form, yard layouts, building forms, system integration features of traditional houses along the Canal side and give advices of protection and reservation of the houses.Based on the field research, the author found that the new type of rural residential culture has not been formed yet, urban culture is assimilating the rural ones. As the ways of economic growth and living custom has been changed, the empty houses and culture deficiency appears in centers of villages. This article entirety analysis the space form and culture connotation of traditional residential houses, expecting on the construction of Northwest new village, to the Humanities character, ways of thinking, aesthetic and value as starting point, combines the local environment factors and social culture, on purpose of make the people a better living environment, to find ways which adaptable to the development of new villages in Northwest Shandong.
