As a traditional Chinese tectonic theory with a long history, borrowed scenery theory originated and developed with the progress of Chinese civilization. With its philosophical intension and its spatial form, it attracts scholars from various fields. Though borrowed scenery is originated from the garden building monograph, Art of Garden Building, it has the feature that infinity is included in finitude. The scenery it forms usually shows unique artistic conception. However, by analyzing the cases, it can be found that borrowed scenery is rather a traditional Chinese human settlement tectonic theory than a theory that is only applied in garden building.By this, the author chose the topic, On Application of Borrowed Scenery in Internal and External Architectural Space. With the application of borrowed scenery theory as an entry point, this paper systematically analyzes and discusses the application methods in internal and external architecture. The paper not only discusses the general history of borrowed scenery method, but also analyzes the cases of borrowed scenery in different historical period and application space with time-line and space-line. The paper also concludes its connotation and application methods and provides further theoretical basis for the development and application of borrowed scenery method in the artistic creation of contemporary architectural environment. This paper mainly consists of six chapters as follows:The first chapter is the introduction, discussing origin of the topic, research objectives, research significance, current studies both home and abroad, the research methods and research contents. The second chapter is of great importance. First, the basic theory of borrowed scenery is discussed and the development and evolution of borrowed scenery is explored in the perspective of time, which is the application and practice of borrowed scenery in Western Han Dynasty, Sui and Tang Dynasty, Song Dynasty, Ming and Qing Dynasty and contemporary era. From the above discussions on borrowed scenery, its philosophical and cultural connotation is concluded, and the theoretical basis for the following chapters is laid.In the third chapter, according to different application space, borrowed scenery method is categorized into three aspects, planning, gardening, and architecture. Practical cases are specially selected and its application in different spaces is discussed which provides abundant practice theory for the following chapters. The forth chapter is also a key one. According to the studies in previous chapters, this chapter concludes specific application rules of borrowed scenery method, which are proved by selected cases and documents. Based on the suggested application rules, the author puts forward some personal views about the development and innovation of borrowed scenery method in contemporary design and creation. The fifth chapter is about application analysis. Based on the results gained from the topic, the author analyzes the design cases of some parts from Zhoucun Street to prove the arguments of the author. The sixth chapter is the conclusion, systematically concluding the results gained from the previous five chapters, so as to better inherit and carry forward the traditions. With the application studies of borrowed scenery method in internal and external architectural space, this paper provides theoretical basis and practical significance for the future design creation and practice. By exploring the application value of traditional tectonic theories in present practice, this paper promotes further integration of traditional theory and contemporary design practice.
