With the development of economy and society as well as the rapid increase of automobile holdings, the number of traffic accidents and casualties always keeps high, and vehicle safety has aroused wide concern. As the supplemental protecting equipment of car body passive safety, airbag is able to reduce occupant harm from “second collision” and deceleration impact effectively in a crash. In this paper the Logistic regression analysis theory is used to evaluate the effect of side airbag protecting occupant from fatal damage in a side impact in the circumstances of excluding the influence of age, restraint system usage, seating position, gender and speed based on SPSS. The result shows that the probability of occupant suffering from fa tal damage with side airbag is 0.719 times than it is without airbag, which means side airbag plays a positive role in reducing fatal damage in the process of side impact. At the same time, the fatal damage probability of every group of each factor is also discussed. In a side impact accident, the occupant farther away from the “first collision” side could collide with the nearer occupant and parts like intruding car door so that serious impact damage happens. In order to solve this problem, far side airbag come into being. However, domestic and overseas related reaserch is rarely seen because it’s not yet popular. The second part of this paper presents sled test and builds up its side impact model with MADYMO software based on multi-body theory. Then, validate the simulation model with the sled test result. The protection effectiveness of far side airbag to far side occupant is studied in the condition of 26km/h and 30km/h relative impact speed, as well as 60 and 90 degrees impact angle based on the validated model. What’s more, the influence of central console to the far side occupant in side collision is also illustrated. The sled test and simulation result shows that Y direction displacements of the dummy’s head respectively decrease by 107 mm and 94 mm when the impact speed is 26km/h and the angle is vertical. Besides, the airbag has greater efficiency when it comes to 30km/h and 90 degrees, and central console has a positive meaning to the dummy occupant. That is to say, far side airbag can lower the head, neck and thorax damage level of the far side occupant in a side impact process.Traffic injury epidemiology is adopted in the paper to evaluate the protective efficiency of side airbag in side impact traffic accident, which could provide exploring the performance of vehicle passive safety eq uipment with theory support. The development and research, including the analysis of the airbag protective performace, is helpful to improve the safety of far side impact, which has guiding significance to advance the development of C hinese passive safety to some extend.
