Wei and Jin dynasties with Southern Dynasties is the transitional period in the history of Chinese gardens. During this poriod, the private gardens grew rapidly and they became the literati’ s main habitat spiritual homeland. Jian’an is the incubation period of Chuchu paradox. The regime of Cao often gathered the literati at the Royal West Park and held banquets to treat them. During this time the main function of West Park is for entertainment. The park owner’s literary accomplishments and the participation of a large number of literati aroused the consciousness of literati and this consciousness began to penetrate into the gardens. Zhengshi is the prominent period of Chuchu paradox. The literati treated zhulin as a place of escaping the discontenting reality. At this phase the gardens began to be associated with the seclusion of the literati. Taikang is the depression period of Chuchu paradox. The famous private garden Jingu garden in this time has an important position in the history of the Chinese gardens. But it is mainly for luxury and has not been the outlet of depressions. At that moment although the literati longed for the seclusive life, they just showed this complex in the poetry and the real recluses were still in the minority. The time after the Southward Movement is the reconciliation period of chuchu paradox. Since the independent aesthetic value of landscape was found, the literati began to regard the landscape as a spiritual sustenance and introduced the landscape into gardens. Thus, the gardens gradually became the private space for the literati to reconcile the chuchu paradox and to yearn for spiritual freedom. The role of Garden has developed and shaped up gradually in the process. It became the literati’s material and spiritual homeland.
