The Research On The Protection And Renewal Of Chieftain Bunkers In The District Of Tibetan And Qiang Ethnic Minority In Sichuan Province

Any architecture is a reflection of a specific history and a particular culture of agiven region. Chieftain Bunkers date from the native chieftain system of the minority insouthwestern China, which emerged in Yuan dynasty. As the architectural format ofChieftain Bunkers are highest level in Tibetan and Qiang district in Sichuan province,they reflect the most advanced politics and economics and culture of this region in aspecific history. In recent years,as the development of society and tourism, ChieftainBunkers get more and more attention from the local government,because of theirheritage value and potential economic value. However the study on the protection andrenewal of Chieftain Bunkers in this region are lack, which results in an increasinglyacute contradiction between the protection and development towards Chieftain Bunkers.The study benefits not only the protection of the global or local historicity ofChieftain Bunkers, but also realizing their available economic and social value. Theprotection and renewal of Chieftain Bunkers will inject new function and vitality to thearchitectural heritage and its living environment,which will solve the contradictionbetween the protection of heritage value and development of economic and social value.In practice,the study can provide theoretical thinking and design reference to protectionand renewal of the Chieftain Bunkers which are under development.Firstly, combined with previous studies and locale investigation of some typicalChieftain Bunkers, the study analysis their architecture characteristics on the basis oftheir natural and sociocultural background, and discusses the problems I found from the locale investigation, and classifies preliminarily the Chieftain Bunkers in theperspective of their protection and renewal. Then defining the object of the study andanalyzing the heritage value of Chieftain Bunkers to provide the basic of protection andrenewal. Finally, based on the deep understanding of the particularity and complexity ofthe protection and renewal, in the perspective of urban design, historic district andarchitecture,the study discuss the methods of the protection and renewal of ChieftainBunkers, combined with the design practice of the protection and renewal of Song gangChieftain Bunker, in order to sum up some available methods.This paper finished by methods of field investigation, theoretic analysis and typicalpractice analysis, discussing the methods of the protection and renewal of ChieftainBunkers in Tibetan and Qiang district in Sichuan province. The research is not onlyavailable for urban planning, construction and management for references, but also forthe protection and renewal of historic buildings, especially Chieftain Bunkers,providinga practicable direction.
