The Tibetan-Yi Corridor is an important channel for ethnic migration and cultural exchange in Southwest China.Ethnic migration and exchange are frequent in the region, and it is also the intersection area between the mainland and Tibet. There have been many national conflicts and wars in history. Therefore,a lot of historical and cultural remains have been left. The watchtower is an important part of the traditional security defense system in this area.Since the Eastern Han Dynasty, there have been many watchtowers in the Tibetan-Yi Corridor, especially in the Tibetan and Qiang inhabited areas.Up to now, there are still Watchtower of different periods in this area.According to the survey, there are more than 1000 Watchtower along the corridor. They are precious relics of national architectural culture and one of the unique "military type cultural heritage" in China.Tibetan and Qiang watchtowers are produced in the specific natural and cultural environment. As the most complete and culturally rich heritage in Southwest China, they were listed in the preparatory list of China’s world cultural heritage in 2012.Their universality and authenticity value are recognized by the world. In the past, most of the researches on watchtowers focused on a single nation and a single region, lacking the concept of comprehensive research on watchtowers. In particular,it lacks the understanding of the relationship between watchtower defense and national unity from the perspective of regional border politics.Based on a large number of literature review and field investigation, this paper takes the Tibetan Yi Corridor as a clue to explain the historical evolution process of the Watchtower from "Qiong(bird)" to "Qiong(cage)" and the relationship between the profound "stone culture" and the Watchtower culture in this area.As a military defense building, the watchtowers in the Tibetan and Qiang ethnic areas are closely related to the local "traditional military culture".The local special political system and frequent wars have affected the development and evolution of the watchtowers. At the same time,as the last link of defense, the construction technology of watchtower itself has a great impact on security defense.By summarizing its unique construction technology and regional materials, this paper analyzes and explains its defense characteristics from the perspective of construction technology.Combined with the digital mapping of the remains of the watchtower building, this paper discusses the historical value of the southwest land space security defense system composed of mountains and rivers, watchtowers, villages, watchtowers and watchtowers from the three levels of region, village and building, and provides solid support for the construction of the "watchtower investigation database" and the "World Heritage Application" of the Tibetan and Qiang watchtowers.
