As an important part of urban waterfront public space,waterfront trail isplaying a vital role in landscape visual display, recreation space experience andecological environment creating, and it also the transition zone between thewater and land.The practical and theoretical research of waterfront trail spaceabroad was started early and relatively mature,raging from spatial planing anddesign, road planning and design, space nodes organization design, recreation,etc.However, domestic research of waterfront trail is still at the beginning stageby contrast.As the mother river of Shanghai,Suzhou River overly declinedbecause of the pollution.Recently,the government takes measure to harness theenvironmental pollution constantly which restored the vitality of the waterfrontsomehow and improved the environment greatly.Especially the construction ofwaterfront trail along Suzhou river,which provide a great opportunity forcitizens to enjoy and experience the water.Nonetheless, lowconnectivity,hydrophilic deficiency of some parts and lack of recreationalfacilities appeared in Suzhou river waterfront trail,therefore,the function of theriver has not been played effectively.And most of the research on the Suzhouriver is from the aspects of waterfront landscape,ecological restoration, plantingdesign,the evolution of the riparian structure,industrial structure changing,etc.However,the research of waterfront trail of Suzhou river has not been involved. Taking the waterfront trail as the study object, investigation and study wasapplied to analyze the spatial waterfront trail of Suzhou River in order toimprove the theoretical system of domestic study on waterfront trail andproviding a theoretical direction of planning and construction at the sametime.Besides, its the urgent needs of further rationalize the function andlandscape of waterfront trail space along Suzhou River.Based on the concept definitions and research summarize of waterfront trailabroad and domestic, trail features and connectivity,spatial internal componentsand interface elements were analyzed through on-the-spot investigatingmethod according to the theory and methods of sociological investigation, andusing summarization methods to analyze the spatial interface elementscombination modes systematically from the aspect ofhydrophilic.Meanwhile,waterfront trail along Suzhou river was divided intofour types:park greenbelt waterfront trail,residential greenbelt waterfronttrail,road greenbelt waterfront trail and subsidiary greenbelt waterfront trailaccording to the feature of the greenbelt and environment.Through the methodsbased on the theory of the researches,evaluation system of waterfront trailspace was established through a trilogy of “Results reference-reconnaissancecorrection-experts confirmation”.and to achieve hierarchical order weightvalue of evaluation index system and comprehensive evaluation model oflandscape quality through the way of analytic hierarchy processed compositeindex analysis which was applied to evaluate the waterfront trail along southbank and northbank of Suzhou river,and also different types of thewaterfront trail space.The results showed as following:1.5-4m is the major width of thetrail,linear represented by straight linear and curve linear types and pavement iswidely used in stone and tile in Suzhou river waterfront trail.②The connectivityof southbank and northbank of Suzhou river are under ideal level,which are70.60%,62.12%respectively.③The interface of Suzhou river waterfront trailspace includes water,plants,road,walls,buildings,etc.Different interface typesformed “water-visibility”and “water-invisibility” spatial interface modes.Andwater visibility is determined by the combination mode in waterfront trailspace.“W+P” and “P+P” are the two highest applied modes in the design ofwaterfront trail space, which are37%,25%respectively.④The overall landscapequality of Suzhou river waterfront trail space was showed as level Ⅲ, greatdifference also showed in different sections.There are11sections are at levelⅠ,which has22.92percent,including Mengqing yuan theme park of Suzhouriver,Xikang Rd.to Baocheng bridge(northbank),Peninsula Garden,cang751,etc.18sections are at level Ⅱ,which has37.5%percent,including ChangfengNo.1waterfront greenbelt,Wuzheng Rd. to Xinzha Rd.(southbank),Shanghaisudi chun xiao garden,E cang creative industry,etc.12sections are at levelⅢ,which has12%percent,including Shanghai police station wharf,HengfengRd. to Puji Rd.(northbank), Huayuan complex,Haiyan logistics,etc.4sectionsare at level Ⅳ,which has8.33%percent,including Jiangning Rd.to Guangxin Rd.(northbank), Zhejiang Rd. to Xizang Rd.(northbank), etc.3sections are atlevel Ⅴ,which has6.25%percent,including South henan Rd. to XizangRd(southbank),Kaixuan Rd. to DOHO(southbank),Fujian Rd. to ZhejiangRd.(northbank).⑤The quality levels of different types of waterfront trail spacequality levels also varied greatly.The landscape quality of the park andresidential trail are optimistic,which were showed as level Ⅱ,and affiliatedgreenbelt waterfront trail is close to level Ⅱ,however,the landscape quality ofroad greenbelt waterfront trail is under ideal state,which was at level Ⅲ.⑥Based on the evaluation of the landscape quality,and taking the referencestandards of Huangpu river public environment construction,disposal measureswere put forward from the aspects of aesthetic, ecological and recreation,whichhas certain guidance for the future planning and designing of waterfront trailspace.The innovation points of this paper: firstly,Based on the theory of “Socialresearch methods”,first-hand research data was obtained through the fieldresearch;secondly, Analytic Hierarchy Process and synthetical index methodwere applied in this paper in order to establish the evaluation model of thequality about waterfront trail space. And evaluation index system wasestablished from aesthetic, ecology and recreation of waterfront trail space.Itcan be used for evaluating the similar urban waterfront trail space after someadjustment; Thirdly,further optimization Suggestions were put forward torationalize the function and landscape of waterfront trail space of Suzhou River. Plant data collection was not comprehensive due to the investigation seasonswere mainly in autumn and winter.At the same time,waterfront lightinglandscape was not involved in this paper because the investigation time were atdaytime.Which made the results incomprehensive and subjectively to a certainextent; The paper was focus on the research of waterfront trail space,however,utilization conditions was not studied in this paper,therefore somelimitations showed in the research conclusions.Hopefully,relevant issues willbe studied in the further research.
