Hump Shunting is both an important and difficult job security controls face in the railway industry. Workers involved in the Hump Shunting Operation face various types of tasks, such as cooperating with each other and passing or receiving information. Therefore, the safe operation of the entire Hump Shunting Operations and its workers are inseparable.According to statistics, a large proportion of accidents which occurred during the operations, is due to human error. Examples include workers who did not fulfill their set of tasks in an adequate manner or who failed to undertake necessary preparations before the operations, misuse, improper cooperation, and other causes. Because such a large proportion of accidents occur due to human error (such as cognitive errors or bias) the Hump workers’safety cognition ability needs to be improved. Safety cognition ability is action-oriented, and recognizes the importance of properly identifying hazards, adequate processing of information and accepting the working signal, in order to effectively prevent accidents. This paper introduces the concept of safety cognition, finds the important index that can influence the safety cognition ability of Hump Shunting Operations personnel through expertise questionnaire, and finally establishes the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) analysis model. AHP is constructed to filter important factors, set weights, sort information and includes a theoretical analysis of safety cognition factors on the Hump Shunting Operations personnel. Then, based on the previously completed theoretical analysis, the model uses instruments to measure the five safety cognition factors of Hump Shunting Operations workers:reaction, attention, perception, memory and judgment. The statistical analysis is constructed using mathematical methods, such as the SPSS software, to measure the relevant data. Moreover, the results of the data analysis and the theoretical analysis will be compared. Finally, accidents will be compared by analysing a control group in order to find the factors that affect the safety cognition ability of the Hump Shunting Operation workers by finding out the link between the workers’ age, the length of service and the job security.
