Except ancient loyal gardens and a few number of religional gardens, people takethe most delight in talking about classic private gardens in Suzhou, which centers on“charming, adorable, joyful” themes consistently. This paper focuses on “leaving emptyspace” in design to comprehensively dig into deeper meanings that Suzhou gardensnaturely possess.Take two representaitve gardens of Suzhou garden for example: Canglang Pavilionand Wangshi garden. First, this paper illustrates the application of “leaving empty space”in Chinese painting through paintings fishing alone in the snowed river and springwalking over mountains by Yuan Ma, lonely bird’s scroll by Da Zhu. These works showthe significance that leaving space to artistic conception in painting.(To a certain extent,Chinese garden art originates from Chinese painting). Leaving empty space plays animportant role in deepening the theme and also a more vivid expression of author’semotion. At the same time, it is concluded the technique of empty space for the concreteembodiment of way in the Suzhou garden is: hide, hydrophobic, empty, implicit.Conbined with the traditional culture of “void” and “metaphor” analysis, we can see theuse of empty space, not only is home gardening personal feelings, is also a subtlematerialized form of consciousness.
