Smart grid is the trend and direction of the development of the power grid. And now it has been considered has relation with national strategy. Smart substation is responsible for transformation in smart grid which is the important basis and support of the smart grid. With years of development, Baotou power grid has constructed numbers of stable and reliable traditional substations. But with the rapid development of power grid, demand for reliability, safety and power quality of substation is increasing. Traditional substation has gradually unable to meet the development requirements. Baotou power grid needs to build smart substation urgently. With the advanced intelligent communication technology, we can improve the management of primary equipment and secondary equipment in the substation. Under the condition of computer network, workers manage and schedule the entire substation unified. This improves the level of maintenance and management.In this thesis, designing program for substation’s intelligent improvement is proposed. And key technologies, architecture and basic requirements of smart substation are introduced. On the analysis of current situation and existing problems of Sumu substation in Baotou power grid, the necessity of smart substation’s improvement has been proposed. Intelligent improvement’s technical requirements have been analyzed for Sumu substation. According to the technical requirements, program of intelligent improvement for Sumu substation has been designed, including architecture design, communication channel design and software UI design.This system design includes two aspects, digitalized substation automation system and electrical equipment state monitoring system. Digitalized substation automation system achieves all devices following IEC61850protocol, allowing different devices from different manufacturers to communicate with each other. In this system, smart devices are used to replace analog signal with digital signal. Smart devices communicate with IEC60044protocol, achieving all the devices sharing information. Electrical equipment state monitoring system achieves monitoring, processing and storing data of the whole substation and assessing the device status. Then upload the analysis result to the monitoring and evaluation platform. The design of system improvement complies with the development direction of smart grid construction and achieves the basic functions of smart substation.
