How to relieve the overwhelming process of global space consumption? In what way canwe change the contemporary construction mode of campus occupying hundreds andthousands of agricultural land in suburbs? What kind of space-function structure willcontribute to more intensive use of the urban land? Is it possible that campus design bedeveloped into the third dimension in a time when campus plan is still dominated by zoning-avery two-dimensional approach?Everyone wants space, but earths are limited.Aiming at promoting urban land-use efficiency, this thesis studies on vertical campusabout how to increase urban capacity. By analysis of verified respective and layers of schemesand practice, the author summarizes the definition/features/catalogs of vertical campus, demonstrates the value and restrictions of it, and then concluding up the design strategies ofits function/flows/space/form, which may end up being a supplement mode of contemporarycampus design and offering reference for future vertical campus designer. This thesis concludes of6chapters:First chapter is Instruction, which introduces the context/value/methods/framework ofthis study.Second is Summery of Vertical Campus, which tells the history and current developmentof vertical architecture and vertical campus, and then comes up with problems to be solved.Thirds is Base Study of Vertical Campus, which concentrating on definition, features, and catalogs study of vertical campus.Forth is Value and Restrictions of Vertical, which demonstrates advantages of verticalcampus in city’s/university’s/student’s respect, then the disadvantages in function, flow, space, disasters, safety and price.Fifth is Strategies of Designing Vertical Campus, which illustrating design strategies ofurban site disposal, functional layout, human flow organization, space setting, form creation,eco-design, structural type selection, precautions of disasters, in detail.Sixth is Conclusion, summarizing the theoretical results of the whole thesis, forecastingfuture visions vertical campus in high density urban context.
