In recent years, Chinesegovernment began to promote the construction of aconservation oriented society. In such circumstances, the development mode of oldcampuses has been updated by the extension of new campuses to the mode ofrenovation of old campuses.Many universities began to renew and reuse old buildingsexisted on the old campuses. Those old school hospitals are one of the old buildings inneed of renovation.These old school hospitals were built in the early days of these universities.All thesections of the hospital werein one building. Now with the increasing number ofteachers and students, the great demands of medical treatment, medical research, andrapidly changed medical technology, these hospitals could not function properly. Itmakes the originally not spacious school hospitalbecome more and more crowded, thevarious flow superposition, internal traffic chaos.In order to serve the teachers andstudents well, these old hospitals must be reconstructed. This paper attempts to analysisthe problems existed in the renovation of old school buildings and to present thedesigning strategies taken in the renovation of old hospital building of ChongqingUniversity, which is a good example of reuse of the old school hospital building and theenhance of the value of the space.This paper consists of four parts.Part I: IntroductionIn this part the author of this paper will introduce theorigins,background,research situation, significance and purpose of this research. Somedefinitions will be made.PartII: literature review about the present situation of renovation of old building inthe universities. It will state some problems existed in the renovation of old schoolhospital buildings with the field investigation in order to show how important andurgent to renovate the old buildings.Part III: Suggestions: In this part, it suggests some design principles, strategiesbased on the idea of intensiveness. It also introduces the process of the renovation madein some of the successful projects both at home and abroad.Part IV: It takes the renovation of old hospital in Chongqing University as anexample to show how the theory and practice are combined with.
