Winter city design is extremely important topic for all cities andcommunities, which are situated in cold areas. Coming from one of Siberiancities (Krasnoyarsk) and living in one of cities that could be called―a wintercity‖(Harbin) I realized that not much work were made on the topic andespecially on practice in neither of these cities.This research contains a comprehensive study of winter city design theoryand practice abroad and in Russian cities, comprehensive study of public spacein urban areas of Siberian cities. Main attention is put on the Krasnoyarsk city(city center’s public areas), the city author came from and knows its urbandesign features and problems.There are lots of different kinds of winter city design methods in Еurope,USA, Canada and Russia.The researh contains a literature overview on thistopic. Further, main differences between these countries singled out. Mainwinter city design approaches (domestic and international) are studied, whichhelps to single out the differences in development of the topic in differentcountries.Further the research touches practical winter city design methods that havebeen used in Canadian, US and Еuropean cities. Study of the most successfulexamples of winter city design applied on practice was made.Then, research studies current situation of research’s object, public spacesin Siberian cities. Here main aspects of Siberian cities’ urban developmenthistory are discussed to help defining the roots of problems existing in publicareas. Further, the research goes through main existing problems of Siberiancities’s public spaces. The last part of the research works on the existingproblems, common public spaces’ problems of all Siberian cities and onKrasnoyarsk city’s center canvas. Using the analysis of domestic and foreigntheoretical basis and experience the author develops a recommendations andproposal for solution of these problems for public spaces.
