The paper states the process of modern spatial structure evolution in Chongqingcity, which based onthe maps and images of Chongqing in historical periods as ablueprint.“Yu Map” of late Qing Dynasty and “Republic Map”with modern senseare the record of urban space in Chongqing. Through the analysis on maps, images, textsand other research materials, the author studied on the physical space, social spaceandconceptualspace then explored the city, thereby obtaining a conclusion of logicalevolution process of the spatial structure by combining the macro evolution of spatialstructure and micro image of “Man in the City”.The full article is made up of six chapters by110,000characters approximately. Inthis paper, firstly, the author studied and sorted the materials which are all the maps ofvarious historical periods. And then extracted the information from each map and gotthe significance of the information on this thesis research.Secondly, the author read individually based on the property distinction between"Yu Map" and "Republican Map": the flat city painted by building fa ade elementssince late Qing Dynasty on “Yu Map”is the intention of restoring urban space. Thusthrough the interpretation of architectural form and streets in the map, analyzed andsortedout the corresponding combinations of architectural space andtypes.“Republican Map” is built on the modern surveying and mapping system, usingthe abstract symbols to express the specific content in thecity, which is able to obtain amacroscopic description of spatial information. The paperanalyzed and redrew the basicmap, transportation structure, the city center and emerging social function, and thensummed up the evolution process of urban spatial structure. The research on map can present the evolution process of the macroscopic scale, but the lack of the description “Man in the City” would keep the interpretation of thereal urban space in vague. Therefore, in the final chapters, as a figurativereference, images and texts got rid of the imagination of city. The paper referred to theindependent translation English material by Thesis Research Group, restoredandinterpreted the city, explained and analyzed the historical images, and obtainedacomprehensive picture of urban studies through the combination of maps, images andtexts. This research program is a sponsored project by The National Natural Science Fund, and the program ID is51178480.
