The theory and application of pipeline risk management has achieved remarkable success abroad. However, the functions and facilities in a gas transmission station, compared with gas pipelines, are much more complicated. Therefore, enormous deviation, or even blunders, could be made if the risk evaluation system is utilized for the risk evaluation in a gas transmission station. Accordingly, it is worthy of further research to establish a set of risk evaluation system for gas transmission stations referring to current foreign and domestic techniques and experience in pipeline risk evaluation.As a typical station in the Sichuan-to-East gas transmission project, Puguang Initial Station(PIS) was selected for the risk evaluation and analysis. Employing RBI evaluating techniques, the risk grade of the pipelines and facilities in PIS was ascertained; by computing future risks, the equipment and pipelines whose risks were prone to exceed the Risk Acceptability Criterion were localized so as to assist in the safe operation of the equipment in the next3years. Based on the RCM analysis, the station was reasonably compartmentalized into systems and subsystems; by ascertaining the technical levels and functions of the equipment, the main failure modes, influences, and failure causes of the compressors were recognized, the risks in the compressor station evaluated, high-risk items identified, and the maintenance strategies devised. Through the compartmentalization of the Safety Instrumentation System(SIS) for PIS, the equipment under control(EUC) were ascertained, relevant risks identified, the EUC-protecting SIS augmented, the corresponding safety instrumentation function(SIF) determined, and the SIL grade of the SIF achieved according to the analysis of the outcomes.On basis of the study, the risk magnitudes, at present and in the next3years, of278facilities and pipelines in PIS were identified. In current working condition is2.52%mid-high-risk items, no high-risk items. More than80%risk items originated from the20%facilities and pipelines of all.5EUCs recognized8SDFs, including2of SIL-,2of SIL a,3of SIL2, and1of SIL3. Besides,28.57%low-risk facilities were recognized, thus decreasing the cost of over-protection;23.81%high-risk items were recognized, to which much significance should be attached to in maintenance. Gas transmission stations were supposed to consolidate the usual operation and management from the perspective of responsibility, technical safety information, technical risk analysis, management of change, operating instructions, operational safety, training, machinery maintenance etc.
