Land resource is a kind of precious resource that has some characteristics, forexample, the area is limited, the location is fixed, the use is various, and under certainconditions it could be used permanently. Land resource is the basis for people’ssurvival and development. Scientific and rational land use activities would do greathelp in sustainable development of our country and the "five-in-one" overall layout.The optimization of land use structure is one important aspect of using land resourcescientifically and rationally. The quantitative judgment of land use structure is thebasic of its optimization, and could be used to evaluate the optimization results.This paper described the researches of land use structure and the birth anddevelopment of Gini Coefficient, illustrated the studies and application of using GiniCoefficient to study land use structure. After summarizing prominent problems of theresearches, this paper emphasized using Gini Coefficient in land use structureresearches is of great significance that is good for the quantitative judgment of landuse structure. Then, this paper explained the connotation, composition system,calculation process and other related contents of Gini Coefficient in order tounderstand and expand it better in theory. Based on the theory research, this studycompiled the calculation tool of Gini Coefficient using Python language in ArcGISplatform, which could calculate the coefficients efficiently and accurately. At last,using China as an example, this paper calculated the statistical data of China from theyear of1998to2008, and got the results in national and district level using provinceas calculation unit and analyzed the results.Based on the theoretical research and example calculation, the conclusions are asfollows: Firstly, there is a theoretical system of Land Gini Coefficient, and Land GiniCoefficient is consisted of three basic land use Gini Coefficients that are calledLGCSpatial, LGCAmount and LGCQuality. As every basic land use Gini Coefficienthas its own connotation that is different with others, their calculation processes andcalculation indexes are different. Secondly, Land Gini Coefficient and coefficients inthe system could explain the conditions of land use structure quantitatively. Thirdly,the calculation tool of Land Gini Coefficient is convenient and reliable, and it couldeffectively improve the calculation efficiency. Fourthly, the land use structure innational level was in reasonable level, and the result of national level in the year of2008was larger than the result of1998, and the result decreased in the final stage.Fifthly, the results in district level showed that the land use structure of west districtwas in absolute unequal level meaning the land use structure optimization wasnecessary and important, while the land use structure of middle, east and east-northdistricts were in absolute equal level meaning the land use structure was relativelyrational that could be adjusted appropriately.
