R is a company with integrated services, covering from mechanical products distribution to consultancy. At present, its products have been widely applied to industries like engineering machinery, electrical equipment, locomotive manufacturing, paper making and shipbuilding industries, as well as equipments related to wind power and high-speed railways.Due to its emphasis on principles of integrity, speed and quality service, R has achieved fast development and satisfactory sales performance in past years. Since R only enters China for a short time, inevitably, there exist several problems in its supplier management system. For example, the large quantity for suppliers caused by complex purchasing categories, the lack of classification of procurement, and in particular lack of management in suppliers of lucrative strategic materials. It is the absence of managing and maintaining supplier relations that results in the increase of purchasing cost and customer churn. Therefore, the top priority of R is to improve and optimize purchasing strategy and supplier management.Based on the practice of machinery industry enterprise as an example, this paper is aimed to establish the evaluation and selection system of strategic material supplier by using the material management, supplier management and so on.
