With the development of economic integration and economic globalization, foreign trade hasbecome an important driving force in promoting the economic development of a county,Meanwhile,the development of foreign trade has also caused dynamic changes of the domesticlabor market.Our country is a developing country with abundant labor force, foreign trade hasplayed an asignificant role in the economic growth and employment. However, with the transitionof economy and the adjustment of industrial structure, there is mismatch between the current labormarket structure and foreign trade.Based on these backgrounds, the paper makes a empirical studyof the effects of foreign trade on employment.Firstly, the paper carded the literature study on the effects of foreign trade on employment,organizing and commenting the existing literature from aspects of the empirical research and theresearch methodology. At last, China, Japan, Korea, Singapore were selected as the objects of thepaper, and their economic development is divided into two stages by the per capita GDP, Then thepaper explored the effects of foreign trade on employment in the different stage, And bycomparing the effects of foreign trade on employemt on Japan,Korea,Singapore in the twostages,the paper drew the conclusions of the study, so as to propose the corresponding policyrecommendations for the development of foreign trade and employment in the future.The conclusions of the paper are: the export growth has always been exerting a positive effecton employment, and this is independent of the the economy stage that a country located;the importgrowth may also have influence employment positively, but it’s relevant to the the merchandisestructure of import when a country is locating one specific economic stage; the effects of theexport growth of labor-intensive and capital-intensive products on employment is related with theeconomic stage that a country located; According to the Error-Correction model and the impulseresponse function,in the short-term the growth of export,import and capital-intensive productsexport has positive influence on domestic employment in the second stage, and the export growthof labor-intensive products may exert negative effect on domestic employemt. Moreover the development of foreign trade has a significant effect on the employment, but ther are someunfavorable factors influencing the positive effect of employment of foreign trade.
