| Economists have always focused on the issues about economic growth. Healthyeconomic growth of a country or region is the key symbol of its long-termdevelopment. Human capital and energy source are boosters for economic growth andplaying important roles in modernization process. They are able to improve the levelof human capital, develop and utilize new energy to enable a country to take a placein increasingly heated international competition.China’s economic development has made remarkable achievements with averageannual growth rate above8%since1978. In2010, The gross national product ofChina exceeded that of Japan and became the second-largest economy. The researchresults of scholars at home and abroad have proved that human capital and source ofenergy are the crucial factors promoting the economic growth of a country or region.The eastern coastal areas of China have geographical advantage, abundant materialand human resources. With the further development of Chinese reforming andopening policy, the astonishing speed and quality of economic growth has attractedclose attention of the world. What kind of effect on earth has energy source andhuman capital had in the economic growth of costal area? Based on Schultz andLucas’ theories of economic growth and the system resource constraints theories ofenergy, this article qualitatively analyzed the relationship among human capital,energy source and economic growth. After that, according to the statistical data from1990to2010of eastern coastal provinces, linear regression model was utilized toinvestigate the contributions of human capital and energy source to economic growthrate. It was found that the economic growth was driven by material in eastern coastalregions during1990to2010. This style of economic increase the high contributionrate of material capital and energy along with relatively low contribution rate ofhuman capital squandered the advantage of increasing returns to scale in coastalprovinces. However, there were many problems emerged in economic growth, such asincreasingly prominent energy demand imbalance, deteriorating environmentalpollution. Human capital has failed to give full play in promoting economic growth.These factors made against the healthy, sustained and stable economic development incoastal region. Aimed at solving these problems, this article threw out following corresponding suggestions. The level of human capital could be improved bypromoting the development of education, encouraging enterprises to makecontribution and constructing a system for human capital sharing. In order toguarantee the safe supply of energy, new energy should be developed and energy-saving industrial system should be constructed.This article divides into five parts. The first one is the introduction, whichintroduces the background, the relationship among human capital, energy source andeconomic growth was summarized based on previous research. Meanwhile, this partillustrated the research method and technology, innovation ideas and deficiencies. Thesecond part was mainly about theories of relationship among human capital, energysource and economic growth, including concepts of human capital and energysource, characteristics and relative theories. As to theories of human capital,Schultz’s theories, Arrow’s "learning by doing" and Lucas’ model of accumulation ofhuman capital were discussed. With regard to theories of energy source, it focused onresource constraint. The third part qualitatively analyzed the relationship amongenergy source, human capital and economic growth including the overall situation ofeconomic increase, the development of energy source and human capital in easterncoastal regions. On the basis of accounting of human capital, the contribution rates ofenergy source and human capital to economic growth in coastal provinces werestudied empirically. In the last part complementary suggestions were proposed aimingat solving the problems emerged in above studies. |
