With its unique advantages of broadband and networking, passive optical network (PON) has become the mainstream of broadband access network. Based on PON, this topic analyzed the methods, the significance and the challenge of current PON monitoring. Further more, this paper highlighted the application design of passive optical network link of non-OTDR.The main content is as follows:(1) The structure and the facing challenges of PON monitoring were introduced in this paper and PON monitoring technology was divided into two broad categories, namely, the two kinds of monitoring technologies respectively based on OTDR and non-OTDR. Today’s main monitoring methods in the field of PON were described in this paper, such as, the OTDR monitoring technology of single wavelength, the tunable OTDR monitoring technology, the Brillouin OTDR (BOTDR) monitoring technique and the PON monitoring technology of non-OTDR. Besides,the advantages and disadvantages of above different monitoring programs were also analyzed in this paper.(2) A PON monitoring technology based on optical notation was designed by making use of filter performance of FBG and distribution differences of ONU. Software and relevant laboratory instruments were respectively used to simulate and verify this scheme, which showed that the PON monitoring technology based on optical mark method can achieve point to multipoint. PON monitoring, that is to say, this technology can improve the monitoring efficiency by overcoming the disadvantages of the OTDR monitoring of single fiber link only.(3) A kind of PON monitoring scheme based on OCDMA was designed by making use of the technical principle of OCDMA. The scheme will code at the user side,decode at the monitor end and determine link communication situation through the decoded autocorrelation peak. Software simulation and experiment showed that the monitoring scheme can realize the monitoring requirements of big ratio of PON multi-user and reflect the corresponding PON branch communication link state in time.Therefore,this monitoring scheme will have a bright prospect in research on OCDMA system in the field of PON monitoring.To sum up, this paper has finished the design, simulation and experimental validation of two complete PON monitoring system,which has achieved good results. And also a series of valuable research data has been provided,which will promote the deep research and commercial application of the non-OTDR PON monitoring.
