Along with the historical transformation of our country archives from "national model" to "social model", culture and public attributes of archives have been growing and the importance of the culture and education function of archives has gradually recognized by society. Look from around the world, the public education services of archives has developed a mature professional concept in many developed countries in Europe and America since the national archives of French directly carried out public education activities in the1950s. However, because of the time of archival public education services in our country later, there is no system study of this new phenomenon in the archivist field currently.The public education activities of archives is not only the best combination of archives and culture and society, but also plays an important role in promoting the development and utilization value of archives resources and improving the public relations of archives department. On the level of theory, studies on public education of archives not only can expand the research space of the archival science, but also provide a possible and potential perspective for the refinement, deepening and integration of many hot issues in the archivist field such as the construction of public archives, the construction of archives culture and archives service socialization. On the practical level, studies on public education of archives can analyze the mature concept and advanced experience of developed countries and other cultural institutions and provide beneficial reference for the integral improvement of the archives public education service level in our county.Based on the review and reference to predecessors’ research results, the paper first defines the concept of archival public education and analyze its content and characteristics, and then reviews and combs the development history of archival public education from the perspective of history evolution since the French Revolution which establish the theoretical basis of the study. Afterwards, the paper analyzes the present situation and the similarities and differences of public education services of Beijing archives and Shanghai archives in our country and Archives of developed countries such as The British, the United States, Australia and Singapore through typical case from the practical application perspective. Finally, combined with the shortage of archival public education in our country, the paper puts forward effective strategy from the macro and micro aspects, and hopes to promote the sustainable development of archival public education in our country.
