In the early days of the Internet, the main content is static data, including text and image. After nearly ten years of rapid development, the Internet has already contained massive information of static media and video. In this context, Video on Demand(VOD) has become a major service on broadband network. The main operation for VOD is playing on user’s control(select time and form of playback). Compared with the traditional cable television, VOD has the advantage of flexible and can be demand according to user’s needs. Implementations of VOD in various broadband network, become a hot research field of multimedia and network. In the applications of the VOD system, multiple user accessing, concurrent data stream and high quality of service are the requirements of system design. But in the current VOD system, research are simply in dedicated server with high performance and improvement on network bandwidth. But there is few studies on soft and hard system architecture. Distributed VOD system is a important method to realize large scale VOD systems. After the analysis and comparison of the related papers and existing VOD system, this paper puts forward a distributed VOD system based on Windows Communication Foundation(WCF) and Service-Oriented Architecture(SOA). Compared with the traditional VOD system, it uses PCs as media servers. Its distributed structure has better scalability. This solution can satisfy the demand of medium, even large-scale VOD system, using WCF. This paper describes the design method of the distributed VOD system based on SOA, and illustrates the principle of constructing distributed media servers based on WCF.
