The degree of informatization has become an important criterion to reflect the strength and level of modernization of a country, region or industry. The forestry informatization is the development trend of modern forestry, and it has gained many achievements in these years. However, the utilization of forestry infonnation resource is still at early stage, for example, the related standards are lack of comprehensiveness and consistency, the level of forest infonnation resource integrity is not high, and a unified data control is hard to be conducted.The principle of current information retrieval is based on keyword matching. However, such methods can not fulfill users’infonnation retrieval needs in many cases. For example, due to the phenomenon of polysemy, the searching tool usually returns many irrelevant results. The information retrieval based on ontology can effectively understand user’s retrieval needs, and provide goods searching experience. Therefore it has attracted much attention from academy.This article, firstly takes a detailed review on thesaurus, ontology and information retrieval. Secondly, it selects forestry as target research area, and uses the ontology constriction methods to transform forestry thesaurus into forestry ontology. Thirdly, it proposed a searching platform prototype for information retrieval based on ontology. In this platform, classic information retrieval method (keyword matching) and ontology-based information retrieval method are compared. The results suggest that, to some extent, the latter one show higher precision and recall ratio than the former one. Finally, limitations and future work are discussed.The main work of this article is,it tries to construct forestry ontology and provides a software prototype for information retrieval based on ontology. This article can be considered as a good reference in the area of forestry infonnation resource management.
