"Coral" Semi-monthly Magazine (named Shan Hu Semi-monthly Magazine inChinese) was a publication jointly organized by Fan Yanqiao and Ye Wenbin inSuzhou in July1932. Fan Yanqiao was the chief editor and Ye Wenbin was the issuer."Coral" was printed by the Suzhou Wenxin Printing Company. It lasted two years andthen published its final issue in June1934. Objectively speaking,"Coral" definitelyhad a vital significance in both of the text-meaning and the research value.This thesis selects "Coral" Semi-monthly Magazine as the object of investigation,basing on four volumes of the publication. After taking a wide view of the magazine’shistory and content characteristics, this paper evaluates the literary significance of"Coral" by analysing related novels, literary monographs and so on. Further more,through detailed textual analysis, the paper also makes a comprehensive commentaryon the unique epoch style that "Coral" unfolds. The article is divided into three parts:The first part emphatically discusses the editing and publishing of the magazine.In1931, the Japanese invaders took up the three Northeast provinces. In1932, theystarted the January28th Incident and many Chinese people became destitute andhomeless."Coral" issued in the age of turbulence with its slogan "saving the Chineseby culture", and built a mutually successful relationship with the readers. This partintroduces the tenet and operating strategy and explores the reasons that "Coral"ceased publication.The second part mainly pays attention to the content of the magazine."Coral"Semi-monthly Magazine was fine in print and good in quality. It covered poem,fiction, textual criticism, manga, photography etc."Coral" not only saved some rareacademic research texts, but also left valuable reference materials about modernSuzhou society from the angle of sociology and folklore. This part studies theworking team of the "Coral", and further analysis the content characteristics of thepublication. The third part is about the literary significance of "Coral". Fan Yanqiao, the chiefeditor of the magazine, established the Star Society. To mark the tenth anniversary ofStar Society,"Coral" published articles about the memorial activities, providingprecious firsthand data. The photographs were also very rare."Coral" witnessed theenormous amount of pain and suffering that Chinese people experienced. This partdiscusses essays that concerning Star Society, the controversies between the new andthe old literature and the national calamity, so as to make a clear comment on themagazine’s literary significance.
