As the number of prisoners is increasing, crime composition is complex. Many crimesare of high educational background and active thinking. Due to the fault of prison supervision,the criminals will escape at night or in such bad weather like a rainy or foggy day. Thetraditional management style depending on manual prevention with camera surveillance hasbeen unable to meet the requirements of modern prison management.An overall design scheme of the prison positioning is put forward after the summarizingof background, meaning and progress at home and abroad. Firstly, two typical routingprotocols are introduced. Through NS2simulation tool, packet delivery ratio and normalizedrouting overhead and performance of two routing protocol are simulated and compared. TheAODV routing protocol is adopted in the harsh environment at last. Secondly,the hardwaredesign of the system based on Zigbee CC2430/2431is adopted to realize the prison personnelpositioning. Finally, Zigbee wireless location network was built with four reference nodes tolocate a center node,and the received data was sent to the upper computer via a gateway node.The gateway and the reference node was designed with CC2430chip, and the mobile nodewithCC2431chip.Through the test, simulation results indicated, the central node positioning can berealized in the range of64m><64m with four reference nodes. The average localization error is2.3meters. It is expected to meet the requirements of the prison area positioning range afterfurther improvement.
