With the dietary structure requirements continuing to increase, the sheep industry is in the rapid development of its inherent advantages. At present, breeding information monitoring and management integration are adopted to realize farm information management in foreign sheep industry. While domestic information technology farming techniques still remain in the database management software on the computer side, and the farming information acquisition still relies on manual recording, which is low efficient, of high error rate and untimely updated. In order to solve the above problems, this paper drew on the advanced experience of foreign countries, set up an overall sheep farming information management scheme on the basis of the actual farm researches. The program included mobile handheld terminal, ZigBee wireless communication network and the host computer database management system, and handheld terminal included RFID radio frequency identification module, ZigBee wireless communication module and embedded system. What its workflow was that mobile handheld terminal automatically read sheep electronic ear tags by the RFID radio frequency identification module. Through the touch screen and manual entry, the breeding information like sheep pedigree, lambing, weaning, transfer group, and vaccines was input. Eventually, the above data were packaged in ZigBee wireless communication network by the embedded system, they were uploaded to the database management system in computer for analyzing and processing, data were provided to query functions for the hand-held terminal. The handheld terminal hardware and software design were as follows:Firstly select an125k RF design RFID radio frequency identification module and its interface circuit. Secondly analyze the characteristics of the wireless communication technology, choose the CC2530chip to design ZigBee wireless communication module and its interface circuit. Finally select ARM11core board with S3C6410processor, adopt PCB technology to integrate power, reset, LCD, etc on a floor board, to form an embedded system. The cross compile tools are installed on the host machine Fedora9operating system, and the bootstrap program, Linux kernel and yaffs2file system are cured on ARM11core board, which builds embedded Linux running environment. The system compiles the query, hybridization, transferring group, lambing, weaning, vaccines and other user interface program in the Qt graphical interface development environment of the host machine, calls the device driver to control serial ports,buzzers and other peripherals, and transplants the cross compiled Qt/Embedded user interface program into embedded systems. RFID module and communication program between embedded processor based on serial port communication protocol are designed in this system. In IAR integrated development environment of the PC, The ZigBee2007protocol stack in OSAL resource allocation mechanism are utilized, ARM11core-board and wireless communication program, serial port communication program between ZigBee module are developed.In the environment of laboratory and farm, the functionality and property of the portable handheld terminal are tested. The results show that the handheld terminal can read the sheep’s identity information in real time and can collect,upload,inquire breed aquatics of the sheep;The handheld terminal has many advantages to meet the needs of information management of the farms,for example,the small size,the low cost,the friendly human-computer interaction interface,the good robustness in wireless communication property and the long continuous working period reaching to3.5h under power supply condition.
