Switches are an important factor in determining performance of any moderninterconnect network designed for high-performance computing and signal processing. With the increasing number of network services, the traffic flow that networks arecarrying has also risen sharply. Meanwhile, the requirement of QoS has become strict. In the face of large forwarding table, it calls for high-speed packet processing andenough memory capacity to a switch system. In a word, switch system requireimprovement entirely. The performance of the switch system can be improved by choosing compatiblepacket switch architecture in terms of switch capacity, port throughput and delay.Shared memory architecture is always in a dominant position in the evolution ofswitch architecture. It has been mainstreamed after evolvement and improvement dueto its high performances under different traffic condition. This paper starts with the network background nowadays and puts emphasis onthe shared memory architecture with different approaches after analyzing shared busswitch, shared memory switch, crossbar with CIOQ switch and CLOS switch andtheir characteristics. Otherwise, the paper generally and clearly study on thecharacteristics and advantages of shared memory switch system from applicationdomain to buffer management scheme by implementing a real switch chassis systemand prove that shared memory architecture is an advisable and high performanceresolution after performance tests.
