With the rapid growing demand for GPON ONT (Gigabit-Capable Passive Optical Network Optical Network Termination) of the domestic telecom operators, the competition among the equipment manufacturer is becoming more and more intense. In recent years, the purchase price is dropped continuously by the operators, so how to cut the cost down is becoming a research subject that every manufacturer has to pay attention to.In this paper, a deep analyze on the BOM (Bill of Material) cost of GPON ONT system is given, in which we find lower the cost of the optical transceiver module in the system a more feasible scheme to cut the cost. Comparing with several other ways, we confirm the so called "BOSA on Board" a best method. To prove the practicality of the "BOSA on Board" method, our company has produced some GPON ONT samples based on that method in cooperation with a local optical transceiver module manufacturer. When the samples are ready, tests about EMC (Electro Magnetic Compatibility), thermal solution, optical interface parameters, etc. are given on them. The results recorded in the paper show that the "BOSA on Board" method can lower the cost by10RMB, and still meet the requirement by the Communications industry and the telecom operators. In addition, a new method on uploading the DDM (Digital Diagnostic Monitoring) parameters of optical transceiver to the remote management platform is mentioned in the paper. It allows the GPON ONT SOC (System on Chip) get the DDM parameters from the optical interface without the MCU (Micro Control Unit) in the optical transceiver.
