With a large range of pressure, very high efficiency and great applicability, reciprocating compressors were wildly used for oilfield and refinery. Due to complex structure of machinery, numerous components and various malfunctions, it was too difficult to maintain and repair the reciprocating compressors. The maintenance personnel usually could not find out causes for faults promptly, which let the personnel awkward usually. If we could exactly grasp the relationships between symptoms of faults and corresponding causes of faults, applying the knowledge of diagnosis into maintenance, there would be a lot of surpportment for repairing the equipment. So it was very necessary and important to devise the fault diagnosis expert system of reciprocating compressors.Firstly, the writer illustrated the working principal of reciprocating compressors and an importance of the equipment in oil industry. Secondly, the writer mainly studied the failure mechanism of the series of DPC800reciprocating compressors in some oilfield. On one hand, the author studied failure mechanisms qualitatively for some unusual malfuctions; on the other hand, he studied common failure mechansim quantitatively in order to search the root causes. Thirdly, for improving the accuracy and efficiency of fault diagnosis expert system, the writer integrated case knowledges and rule knowledges to device mix two-way deducing institution. On the basis of numerous failure cases and experiences of experts, the author built the base of knowlegde for fault diagnosis expert system. So he programmed the fault diagnosis expert system in VB. Lastly, employing many types of diagnostic results, he let us confirm the truth that the fault diagnosis expert system for reciprocating compressors was very accurate and reliable in application.
