Expert system as an important application field of artificial intelligence, has made remarkable achievements in many areas of medicine, engineering, etc., and with the development of China’s aviation industry, the contradiction between the scarce of aircraft maintenance specialists and the increasing of maintenance workload is greater and greater. Developing of aircraft fault diagnosis expert system can solve this contradiction. This paper takes the aircraft automatic flight system failure cases and fault tree as the basis, designs and implements aircraft fault diagnosis software system. The software can check the aircraft’s failure cases in the past, convert complex faults to a fault tree and store them in the database, in order to compensate for the lack of case base. The research is carried out in the background of the development of aircraft fault diagnosis expert system software. The design and implementation of software systems are described in detail, which mainly contain the design of knowledge base, the analysis of case retrieval model and fault tree, the development of expert system inference mechanism and the design of User Interface. In the process of the software development, mainly the following technical problems were solved: the selection and improvement of case retrieval algorithm, the design of painting tree module in fault tree, the realization of fault tree analysis by computer, the design of case and fault tree knowledge base and the optimizing of the User Interface expert system software. The entire software system designing always follows the rules of user-friendly, safe and reliable, simple, focusing on scalability and maintainability. All procedures have been successfully compiled, and the software system has also been testing completed in a simulated operational mode. The operation result was good, basically completed the functional requirements.
