With the exponential growth of data traffic and the emergency of high performanceoptical network equipments, WDM becomes the key technology of next generation corenetwork. Due to the uncertainty and unpredictability of IP traffic, optical networks need toprovide variant dynamic bandwidth, efficient traffic provisioning and rapid opticalrestoration. To facilitate the new optical services development, the proposal of IntelligentOptical Networks is straightforward.However, there are still many problems on Intelligent Optical Networks(ION)deployment based on ROADM have not been solved. For instance, in networks protectionand recovery, the capability and distribution of redundant resource directly affects the “fastrecovery” of ION optical survivability function. The Shore Path First algorithm on routingcannot guarantee the highest resources utility. How to build a green-field network? How toameliorate resource allocation? How to insure the survivability and quality of the user data?How to satisfy tomorrow dynamic traffic demands? This paper made a comprehensive andsystematic research on the above problems. And the answer for these is ROADM. Base onthe investigate on ROADM architecture, this paper proposed a Colorless, Directionless andContention-less (CD&C) architecture which combines the features offered by both theC&D architectures. And finally this paper made performance analysis of this architectureto verify the feasibility of the architectureIn the first part, the background, relevant standardization and development trend ofROADMs are described. In the second part, the main contents are theoretical analysis ofROADM based on various components of ROADM. And then the Reconfigurable OADMconcept is introduced. At last, a brief introduction of the ROADM based on photoniccross-connect is discussed. In the third part, the experimental investigations of ROADMdevice are introduced. And then I describe the application of the ROADM devices. At theforth part, a ROADM based on PXC and WSS is presented because of the lack ofcontention-less function. In the fifth chapter, the performance analysis, choice of suitable sub-system technology, and cost considerations are detailed. At the end of this paper, Imade a conclusion of this paper. And then the research trend of ROADM is detailed in thelast chapter.
