Optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) can select the dropped wavelength from WDM fiber, and add the same wavelength which carry different information at the same time. It achieve add/drop multiplexing function in the field of optical. It has been regarded as one of the key equipments of the WDM optical communication network. The configuration of traditional OADM is fixed. If it should be change, we only can complete at the spot. As a result, all running operation will be affected. Reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) can add or drop wavelength by remote control without influencing the running operations. Therefore, ROADM with the ability of dynamic configuration enables optical network flexible and dynamically reconfigurable. With the rapid development of the network, the traditional fixed OADM hasn't been satisfied with the demands of future communication business. It will be replace by ROADM.Nowadays, distinguished from the ways of channel adding/dropping, we can divide into several categories to build ROADM. In this paper, we compare the advantages and disadvantages of the methods, design the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) collimator, and introduce the construction of it. The FBG optical switch (OSW), which composes by FBG collimators, is the integration package of FBG and OSW. Based on FBG OSW, the designed ROADM not only maintains the original merits, but its structure becomes more compacter, smaller and easier for system integration.In our design, we create a 1 X 5 FBG OSW in order to carry out the ROADM formed with four channels. We also test the ROADM, and simulate the WDM system by using OptiSystem software, according to the performance standards of ideal OADM. Analysis of the experiment shows that the designed ROADM, which is simple in structure and easy to operate, would not impact the WDM system. In addition, the ROADM is benefit to minimize facture difficulties and reduce the cost for it is utilized the existing mature technology. It is suitable for mass production and can be applied in practice.
