Antenna arrays are widely used in phased array radars, communication systems, etc..Beamforming is the key technology of array signal processing. Array pattern synthesis is thebasis of beamforming, and it is mainly about designing one array pattern that can approximatedesired array pattern by optimizing the weights of amplitude and phase, the number or theposition of antennas. This paper focused on the pattern synthesis of circular arrays and the element positionoptimization of Archimedes spiral arrays.Firstly, combining with the actual requirements, an optimal wideband beamformingmethod based on uniform circular arrays with directional elements is proposed in this paper.we often use directional antenna as the elements of arrays, such as horn antenna, microstripantenna, in practical applications. It is that circular arrays with directional elements caneffectively radiate energy outside the array and avoid internal energy consumption. Based onthis, combining least squares criterion and enumeration method, this paper puts forward anoptimal wideband beamforming method based on uniform circular arrays with directionalelements. This method is suitable for wideband communication array design. Simulationsshow the effectiveness of the proposed method.Secondly, this paper analyses the quantitative influence on circular arrays withdirectional elements. The general model of amplitude and phase quantization error is given inthis paper. The expression of relative average sidelobe level caused by quantitative error isdeduced for some common radiation functions. Finally, in order to obtain sidelobe level as low as possible, the element positionoptimization of Archimedes spiral arrays by the improved genetic algorithm is deduced.Archimedes spiral arrays can be regarded as a continuous transition form of concentric ringarrays, which have unique advantages in wideband performance. Good results are obtained.
